In terms of cannabinoids, there are three groups: acidic, neutral, and functional. Cannabinoids fall into one of these three categories based on their ability to interact with the body’s native endocannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2).
The Functional Group
The functional group is further divided into two types depending on their solubility in fats or water. Lipophilic (fat-soluble) cannabinoids are more potent than hydrophilic (water-soluble) cannabinoids; however, they can be more difficult for your body to absorb because they need special enzymes in the digestive tract to metabolize them. On the other hand, hydrophilic cannabinoids can be easily absorbed by your body during digestion because they do not need the extra enzymes that lipophilic compounds require.
The Acidic Group
Cannabinoids from the acidic group include tetrahydrocannabinol acid (THCA) and cannabidiol acid (CBDA). These cannabinoids are only found in raw or unheated cannabis, so they have a higher boiling point than cannabinoids. These types of cannabinoid acids can be converted to THC and CBD through decarboxylation when heated.
THCA is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound that blocks inflammatory mediators called prostaglandins; however, it is non-psychoactive. CBDA, on the other hand, has anti-cancerous properties which block cell proliferation, thus slowing down tumor growth. Both compounds contain antioxidants like vitamin A and C.
Neutral Cannabinoids
Neutral cannabinoids includes cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), and tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV). These cannabinoids are less accurate than those in the acidic group because they only interact with endocannabinoid receptors due to chemical changes when these compounds are exposed to heat or light over time.
For this reason, it is important never to expose your cannabis, even dried flower, to extreme temperatures, such as leaving it on your dashboard in direct sunlight or using a lighter attached to a bong.
