For something a little different, what about a city centered vacation? A favorite is Seattle, Washington which enjoys near perfect weather in the summer – not too hot and not too cold (or wet). Kotor, Montenegro

Tucked away on a secluded Montenegro bay, Kotor is surrounded by picturesque scenery and stunning views.

Take a walk through a maze of winding, cobbled streets, embark on a tour of the town’s medieval buildings, climb the 1,350 steps to the town’s ancient fortifications, or embrace your adventurous side and paraglide from the cliffs surrounding the town. There really is something here for everyone!

Kutna Hora, Czech Republic

Established as a mining village during Medieval times, Kutna Hora still boast much of its original architecture. Check out the town’s St Barbara’s Cathedral with its Gothic architecture or visit the Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the Bone Church, which has been completely decorated using human bones!

If you’re visiting during the beginning of June, you’ll also get to take part in the Royal Silver Festival, featuring crafts and goods relating to the mining history of the town. Oh, and there’s also fencing!

Bologna, Italy

Although this beautiful city often goes under the radar, it is home to a rich and varied array for cafes, restaurants, bars, and cultural treats!

If you pay this Italian city a visit, we’d highly recommend a visit to the Museum of Modern Art (they’ve got a super-cool bar!) and a day trip to the new gelato museum.

Coimbra, Portugal

Once a capital city, Coimbra is located in close proximity to two of Portugal’s most bustling cities – Lisbon and Porto. Home to one of the oldest academic institutions in Europe, the university town offers plenty for visitors to do and see.

Make sure you take a tour of the town’s ancient cathedrals and experience some traditional Fado music in one of the town’s many bars and café’s. If you’re lucky enough, you might also get to experience one of Coimbra’s famous festivals. Held each year, the festivals include firework displays and street parties. We’ve got it on good authority that Queima das Fitas (the Burning of the Ribbons) in May, and Festas da Rainha Santa are not to be missed!

Kosice, Slovakia

Whilst Slovakia’s capital city, Bratislava is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, the country’s second city, Kosice, is still relatively unheard of – but we’d highly recommend a visit!

Located on the eastern side of the county, this stunning city boasts an abundance of beautiful gothic architecture, wonderfully preserved buildings, and bucket loads of historic charm.

Top attractions include the Eastern-Slovakia Museum, tucked away within a Neo-Renaissance building in the city’s main square, Villa Cassa, home to Europe’s oldest coat of arms.

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

As well as being utterly breathtaking, this city is also renowned for being warm and welcoming to all of its guests. Rich in history, and surrounded by the Olympic mountains, the capital city offers the perfect mix of east and west with its many museums, mosques, and cathedrals.

Whilst you’re there, make sure you explore the city’s historical centre (you can sign up to a free Sarajevo Walking Tour for an expert guide). There are also plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you entertained during the evenings.

The Anzore Islands, Portugal

Located just off the court of Portugal, these islands are home to stunning, crystal clear blue and green lakes, lush green prairies, volcanic cone and craters, captivating flowers, and delicious wines. If you’re looking for a tranquil and relaxing break, the islands are definitely worth a visit!

Porto Palermo, Albania

Located just south of Himare, Porto Palermo is a stunning expanse of green rolling hills surrounding a well preserved village. The village is centred around a beautiful 18th century castle, whose picturesque grounds spread along the pristine coastline.

As well as exploring the castle, we’d also recommend taking an early morning hike through the surrounding hills, snorkelling in the clear waters, and taking a trip along the coat to the neighbouring town of Agave.

How many gadgets do you take with you when you travel; a smartphone? Tablet? Laptop? E-reader? MP3 player?  Portable speakers? Portable WiFi? I’m sure there’s a whole host of other items that we need to take with us to make our trip more enjoyable and more interactive. They all serve a purpose and without them we find ourselves lost, who can remember a world before these gadgets?! However, travelling with gadgets comes with risks (smashing your screen, theft, racking up a massive data roaming bill, dropping your phone in the sea etc) so it is important to ensure that you put plans in place to cover all eventualities. Here are the best ways to protect your gadgets when you travel…

Protect against theft and loss

Insurance will ensure that your gadget is covered for any sort of damage or theft and this is vital. Travelling abroad with expensive gadgets will put the local thieves on high alert and they will try all sorts of tactics to take your gadgets from you but on the other hand you might be the clumsy type and drop your phone into your Mojito or leave it in the pocket of your swimming trunks whilst fine tuning your backflip off the diving board. Either way, protection is key and insurance will ensure that you are fully protected regardless of what happens to your gadget.  If you are thinking that you already get travel insurance so you are covered, think again.  Nowadays most travel insurance won’t cover your gadgets, you will need a separate plan or to add it separately.

Protect against roaming charges

Staying in touch when abroad really is simple these days, never have truer words been spoken than when a well-known telecoms company used the slogan “it’s good to talk” but also remember that “it’s not good to rack up a massive date roaming bill”. To overcome the potential of coming home to a huge bill it is always worth finding out about the costs of purchasing an international SIM card for your phone so you can receive free calls in most countries and also reduce roaming charges by up to 95%.  For your tablet of iPad you can grab a worldwide data SIM card that gives low cost prepaid internet wherever you are in the world.

Protect against water

For any electrical gadgets that may be used on a beach, around a pool or trekking across rivers, storing them in a waterproof case will work wonders. The cases are available for most gadgets these days and some will even let you use them in the water to take photos – or watch a movie under the sea if you really want! Rather than splash out on an expensive case a good quality Ziploc bag will do the trick (test it with just paper in first). If you are travelling in humid places keep your devices in Ziploc bags always as moisture can seep in and send electronics a bit loopy.

Protect your screen

Our gadgets are constantly in our hands, we never want to let them out of our sights but this puts them at risk of being dropped and smashed. Whilst this cannot be completely eliminated there are things that we can do to make them sturdier. One option is gorilla glass screen protectors.  These sticky, bendable screen protectors stick onto your screen and keep it free from scratches and smashing (there are numerous YouTube videos that show people hitting the glass with hammers but I wouldn’t recommend trying this!)  You can also be extra save and get a sturdy case that will protect your device if you drop it.
